Historic Mesilla

After a morning hike in Dripping Springs, we headed to charming historic Mesilla. It is located south of Las Cruces on Avenida de Mesilla and is home to historical attractions such as the San Albino Basilica, It also features a variety of contemporary boutiques, unique stores, galleries, wineries, and specialty restaurants serving traditional Mexican cuisine,

We were lucky to arrive at the Plaza in time for the El Tratado De La Mesilla Reenactment. The ratification of the Gadsden Purchase, also referred to as "El Tratado de La Mesilla," was remembered on the Mesilla Plaza by re-enactors from the Friends of Fort Selden and Sons of Confederate Veterans organizations. It is an annual ceremony that includes lowering of a Mexican flag and the raising of United States flag of 1854.
