Festival of the Cranes 2017 - Backwater Tour

This year's Festival of the Cranes celebrated the return of sandhill cranes to Bosque del Apache during the 30th anniversary of Festival! This nationally recognized wildlife, birding, and photography festival offered 156 event sessions in 6 days.

The Backwater Tour experienced the refuge from the perspective of water management. We joined water manager, Gerad Montoya on a tour of the refuge and learned how water is moved, used and conserved to create the diverse wetland habitats that attract wildlife and people to Bosque del Apache. Learned the tools and techniques the refuge uses to mimic the conditions to restore the wetland habitat of the historic Rio Grande. Discovered how management of water is critical in providing habitat for sandhill cranes, geese. ducks, endangered species, and other wildlife. This tour took the group places most never get to see.
